Read About the Hilario Family ![]() "Memoir of Our Family" Growing up in the Bay Area - Palo Alto, Ca, I always knew one day I would love to help the less fortunate people around the globe. Luckily when I was in college I met the man who changed me for the greater, Rey. Along the dating paths, Rey opened my interest and made it a reality. After 6 years of dating we got married and soon after more of our humanitarian activities became apart of our family traditions. We have been blessed with 3 amazing girls with such big hearts. Many call them "tres Marias". For Rey and I, we just call them "our everything". Since marrying Rey, who is Fiilipino and was born in the Philippines. We started going there as soon as we got married. I instantly fell in love with the people and the culture. Indeed, I got to travel to the beautiful resorts but also got a chance to see the poor parts of the country. What inspired me and Rey to return to the Philippines about every couple years after our first travel was seeing how gracious and appreciative the people were to our small gifts. As our first daughter, Katelyn, was 18 months, we decided to take her to the Philippines and started to show her about "giving". Rey and I saved up all the new /unopened McDonald's Happy Meal toys we saved for about 2 yrs, Katelyn's toys, brand new shirts from my company I worked at, clothes from us, tons of candy and lugged it to Palawan, Philippines. In the Philippines, we went to a small village along with medical Doctors (both medicine and denistry) that Rey's parents knew and provided free medical checkups, vitamins while passing out things Rey and I gathered back home. As years passed, our family expanded with beautiful daughters, Haley and Paige. As the girls got a little older, they would ask us about the homeless people in the streets. They felt so sorry for them and said they wished they could do something. From our conversations with our girls we made it our Thanksgiving tradition (at the time... ages 6, 4 and 2) to make sack lunches for the homeless and directly hand it out themselves in the local parks of San Jose, CA, every year after. They genuinely enjoyed it and we all had great conversations afterwards. Our family has been back to the Philippines to do our Medical Mission/Giveaways 4 times. In the mean time, our eldest daughter, Katelyn started pursuing her passion in singing. At 9 years old, Katelyn would give free shows to Senior Centers of the Bay Area (Palo Alto, Mountain View and Gilroy). She's also often asked to perform for Senior citizens birthdays, charity events and memorial services. Katelyn, even had her own show to raise money for Make A Wish Foundation. In the summer of 2010, our family moved to Los Angeles to support Katelyn in pursuing her dreams of becoming a professional singer/actress. Since our stay in Los Angeles, Katelyn has sung for many events: LA AIDS Walk, LA Marathon, PACE-non violence initiative from Mayor Villagroisa, Celebrity Showcases, Foster kids and many more. Rey and I hope to expose our 3 girls to opening their hearts and do whatever they can. We have taught them that they can do whatever they want as long as they put their minds and hearts to it. Our thoughts.. "A little is better than nothing". |
