Princess Maria Amor's official visit in Kolkata, India.
"Education promotes individual freedom and empowerment and yields important development benefits. Yet millions of children and adults remain deprived of educational opportunities, many as a result of poverty. We strongly believe that every child has a right and a need to be educated and by providing an appropriate environment and education, these children have a better chance of becoming self-reliant. This, in turn, would translate into a better society to live in", explained by Dr. H.P. Kanoria, SREI's founder and chairman. With a view to break the ‘poverty = manual labour’ cycle of the economically under-privileged society, Suryodaya Trust and Srei Foundation jointly manage two schools at - Santoshpur and Birati, both in Kolkata, with over 700 students and more than 50 qualified staff. The schools draw students from the surrounding urban slums, who are essentially from under privileged backgrounds. To create the right ambience for education, Sunita Kanoria, Chief Patron, Suryodaya Schools and Educationist has taken personal interest in ensuring the best arrangements in terms of cleanliness and healthiness. The students are provided with nutritious free mid-day meal. Text books, note books and school uniforms are centrally procured by the school and provided to the students at subsidized rates. A very nominal monthly fee and admission fee are charged from the students. To emphasize the overall development of students, it is ensured that they participate in extracurricular activities. Princess Maria Amor personally greeted and interviewed the studens and teachers of Suryodaya School and had a taste of their meal."I am very impressed by the condition of the condition of the school and the way they run the facility. I am grateful to the SREI Foundation especially Dr. H.P. Kanoria and Ms. Sunita Kanoria for their excellent advocacy for Education and unparalleled contribution to humanity", said Princess Maria.
